Monasticism throughout History

Our project draws from the resources of both secular and ecclesiastical scholars in Russia who deal with the history of Christian monasticism.

We are striving to renew the connection between generations, paying special attention of the works of pre-Revolutionary scholars, inasmuch as the scholarly tradition of the study of monasticism was interrupted after the 1917 Revolution, and only began to be restored towards the end of the twentieth century.

So we have gathered the most important works of monastic literature that have been translated into Russian, together with research done by Russian scholars on the history of asceticism and monasticism, and have placed them into our electronic library.

Additionally, we publish translations of the most important scholarly research about monasticism written by authors outside of Russia.

Each year, international scholarly conferences are held within the framework of our project, featuring specialists in Byzantine, Oriental (Non-Chalcedonian), and Latin monasticism.
